He also holds the BWLA Instructors Award, is a PDR Coach and an approved Concept 2 Indoor Rower Instructor. He has been a personal trainer for over 10 years and came across CrossFit in late 2004. Dedicated to CrossFit, Karl has been an affiliate owner since 2006 and was jointly responsible for bringing the first ever CrossFit Level 1 Certification to the UK in 2008. CrossFit 3D is Karl’s new venture, which aims to bring CrossFit to more people throughout the UK and Europe.

Rachel Steadman

— Trainer

Rachel is a certified CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit Kids and CrossFit Gymnastics Instructor. Her sports background lies in Swimming and Waterpolo and she is also a qualified Level 2 Swimming Instructor with 5 years’ experience of teaching both children and adults, and also coaching club teams. She especially enjoys teaching children and therefore is a key CrossFit 3D staff member when it comes to CrossFit 3D Kids. She is also the first female PDR instructor in Europe.

Rachel found CrossFit in 2005 through Karl, and has been CrossFitting ever since. She says “CrossFit introduced me to a whole new way of training. I thought I was fit through swimming but now know different! I have learned where my weaknesses are and how to work on them to become a better athlete, and I hope to pass on what I have learnt through CrossFit to others to help them become fitter and achieve their own personal goals. I also look forward to the opportunity to introduce CrossFit to kids and show them that exercise is fun too.”

Rachel also set the fastest ever womens’ time on the official 2009 Krypton Factor Assault course in 2010 and came 4th in the 2009 England Indoor Rowing (womens’ open lightweight category).

Sean Murray

— Trainer

Sean is a certified CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Gymnastics and Level 2 and 3 Gym Instructor. He has always had a keen interest in sport and physical activity with a background in Cross Country running (representing Greater Manchester at County Youth level), 800m, amateur football and later weightlifting. He also previously trained in Jeet Kune Do for three years.

He found CrossFit in 2007 thanks to the film ’300′ and the spotlight of its principles in the training of the cast. “It ticked all the boxes for me and seemed to have the answers so many fitness enthusiasts had been searching for. I had got bored with a weight training regime that had diminished my fitness in the pursuit of mass, so the epiphany happened at just the right time for me”.

He has trained under Karl Steadman since 2007 and his outlook on life has changed greatly through the dynamic culture and community of CrossFit. New horizons and possibilities were presented and tackled, and ultimately a new career direction was taken on. Sean now coaches classes at CrossFit 3D and offers one-on-one training sessions. “There’s no better feeling than helping someone to achieve something and changing their beliefs about what they are capable of. I thank CrossFit, the Steadman’s and the people I train with for that opportunity.”

Some key achievements CrossFit has led him to are: A winners medal in the 500m Indoor Rowing Championship 2009. Trekking up Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike. Completing the Krypton Factor Assault Course. Competing and judging in the Reebok CrossFit Open 2011. Running the Manchester 10km, and Urbanathlon 5km races. Conquering the 17km Royal Marines Endurance Commando Challenge with a fellow 3Dizzler!

James Jowsey

— 3D Therapist and Movement Mechanic

James, aka ‘Jowse’, is CrossFit 3D’s resident sports therapist. His sporting background is professional football, representing England Schoolboys at under 15 level and then signing from Scarborough F.C to Manchester United F.C. in June 2000. He signed professional forms aged 17 and made it as far as the United’s reserve team before being released in June 2004. Football was not meant to be, but his passion in developing as an athlete had always interested him, so he became qualified as a personal trainer in 2005.

Jowse discovered CrossFit in 2006 with a friend and then joined his local CrossFit facility in February 2007, where he met Karl and became CrossFit Level 1 certified in September 2008. Jowse has a keen interest in human movement brought about from teaching CrossFit and always wondered why the movements can be so hard to achieve for some people. Luckily, he began learning under Phil Mansfield, one of the world’s leading sports trainers specialising in biomechanics for performance and injury. Having spent the last two years learning the effects of the ‘3Dimensional’ world that the body exists in, Jowse now uses these skills to help CrossFit 3D’s athletes develop their movement patterns and become stronger and pain-free athletes. The philosophy he uses is ‘Form follows Function’.

Darren Freeman

— Trainer

Darren has been involved in the fitness industry for the past 18 years and was introduced to CrossFit in 2008 when a friend told him to try one of the workouts. 3 minutes and 6 seconds later and he was sold (and well and truly beaten).

Over the past 3 years Darren has been fortunate enough to meet and train with some top athletes who continue to inspire him on both a personal and professional level.

A very passionate and motivated person, Darren takes pride in building a rapport with clients and is dedicated to helping others in achieving their true potential. One of his most notable achievements has been training a 53-year-old woman who at the start of April 2009 could barely manage 2 miles, to a level 12 months later where she completed her first marathon.

Currently, Darren is training a member of the GB water polo team who is hoping to be part of the 2012 Olympics. He continues to offer 1-2-1 sessions alongside my group coaching and looks forward to working with the members and team at 3D.

Darren’s qualifications include; CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer, CrossFit Olympic Lifting Certified Trainer, CrossFit Mobility and Movement Certified Trainer, CYMCA Level 3 Personal Training Diploma, Certified Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Coach (UKSCA), Certified Level 1 Kettbell Instructor
